Observational Units

Observational units are entities whose characteristics we measure.
  • Synonyms: “case” or “subject”; e.g. 1 bedroom apartment in State College
  • In the social sciences observational units are often people or groups of people.
  • In the life sciences observational units may be animals, bacterial colonies, etc.
  • In the physical sciences observational units may be “samples” of some chemical substance or some manufactured good.
