Lesson 10: Interventional Studies (1) Diagnostic Tests, Disease Screening Studies

Overview Section

In this lesson we'll discuss prevention and early detection of disease. Early detection is accomplished through screening procedures.

Upon completion of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • differentiate between primary, secondary and tertiary prevention,
  • calculate and differentiate between sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of a diagnostic test or series of tests,
  • recognize evidence supporting or failing to support the effectiveness of a proposed prevention measure, and
  • recognize examples of bias in screening studies.
